THE VISION

The Mekong Environment and Resource Institute seeks to build trust through understanding and the sharing of knowledge, that serves as the basis for cooperation and collaboration among the peoples and governments of the Greater Mekong Region. To this end, MERI is acting to build a network throughout Asia that will contribute to achieving the following ideals over the short-, medium-, and longer-terms:

Protection, preservation, and sustainable management of natural and human resources, including cultural and historical resources, ecosystems, and habitats of the inhabitants of the Greater Mekong Region

Collaboration among peoples, communities, governments, organizations, and other appropriate groups of the Greater Mekong Region, to protect, preserve, and sustainably manage natural and human resources, ecosystems, and habitats

Social and economic development activities that are undertaken within the context of those most affected by development, and that improve the natural and human environment in rural and urban areas throughout Asia

Preservation and maintenance of historical and cultural resources, including artifacts and records, important to the cultural heritage and Asian identity of communities and other groups in the Greater Mekong Region

THE TOOLS

To achieve the objectives set forth, MERI has as its first priority the networking of statistical and geographic databases throughout the Asia region. The establishment of human and electronic networks among affiliated and associated regional research, academic, and public sector bodies is essential to the development of common ideals. Application of thought processes and analytical tools to bodies of information will provide the basis for identifying shared issues, focusing the use of appropriate resources, and resolving commonly shared problems.

To provide learned analysis and research services to the Greater Mekong Region, The Mekong Environment and Resource Institute operates as a regional knowledge center on natural and human resources, ecosystems, and the environment.

The Mekong Environment and Resource Institute provides training, conducts workshops, and organizes meetings, seminars, and conferences at the local, national, and regional levels, to assist peoples, communities, organizations, and other groups in their efforts to protect, preserve, and sustainably manage natural and human resources, ecosystems, and the habitats of all inhabitants in the Greater Meking Region. To ensure that the information is shared aming all peoples, communities, and governments in the region, MERI will publish materials that inform those who are interested and concerned, of the current state of the resources upon which they depend for their livelihoods, as well as upon the condition of the environment, ecosystems, and habitats within which they live.

The combine experience, practical approach, and insight of MERI's experienced research staff are mobilized for each assignment, providing a well endowed profesional resource base for the analysis and resolution of issues related to numerous environmental and human resource factors.
